A history of the team according to me

By

J. G. Fabiano

Webster defines the word 'team' as, "a number of persons associated in work or activity." Corporate America or anyone working in public service stretched this term out to mean how their workforce should handle the problems and opportunities of their day. In other words the term 'team' is a philosophy all workers should have when they go about the duties of their day.

But, is this a good thing? The best way to answer this question is to look at some famous teams throughout history. I guess the most famous would be The Roman Empire. They decided the best way to handle conquering the world was to put everyone on their team in similar uniforms, get rid of anyone who disagreed with what the team stood for, and then force the rest of the world to either join their team or, well die. This worked for awhile but the basic problem with a team is everyone wants to be the captain. If this doesn't happen by the team rules the team is basically broken. In this case assassination was the most probable way of breaking the rule.

The Roman Empire demonstrated the longer a team lasts the weaker it gets. I believe this is because everyone on the team is more interested in going along with the status quo instead of trying to change certain things and make the team better. Since any variance away from team policies in the Roman Empire would lead to death I find it hard to blame anyone for not wanting to go along with the crowd. As we all know The Roman Empire is no longer but the team concept of their ancestors lives on in organizations like the Mafia and most large labor organizations.

A few centuries later a new team organization was established to try and give some sort of truth and justice system the world could follow. The name of this new team was, "The Knights of the Round Table". The concept was good because having a round table meant a leader was not necessary. Things went along pretty well having wars and death drop in numbers. Then an odd thing happened to this team; a woman showed up. Many say this is what happened to the previous team we talked about but it is difficult to talk about this today because blaming anything on a woman makes their team very angry.

The Germans are famous for their teams. During the early part of the twentieth century the Kaiser built a very powerful team that had everyone goose stepping across Europe. He was opposed by many other nations that were not famous for their teams but had the idea the individual was more important than the whole. A man, or woman; I have to be careful here, will believe in themselves more then they will believe in the many. I guess this is what freedom and liberty is all about. The team people do not like talking about these terms.

Well, the Germans did not do too well with the Kaiser but they were so convinced their team was better than anyone or any other team they tried again with Hitler. He had everyone marching to the same tune with his team. He, and many like him, believed the single mind could never overcome the Arian Team. He went so far as to make sure his team was pure and that no one different would be allowed to join. In fact, he went so far as demanding that these other 'would-be-teams would not exist at all. History proved he did a bit worse than the Kaiser.

After the war a new team was established that promised to keep our world at peace. The United Nations, as it was called, wanted to build a world of talk instead of a world at war. Actually this team has done quite well over the past sixty plus years even though there are many teams across the world that would love to see it go extinct. You see if a team did not have the United Nations agree with everything it did or wanted, then the UN had no possible purpose.

The Japanese and Chinese are famous for their teams. They love meeting in large groups dancing and singing in perfect unison. Everything seems to be team oriented with them. Their industry is team based having all the workers stay in colossal dormitories and exercise in massive groups. They have been so successful many of our industries try and copy their type of team philosophies. The basic problem here is when one does not have any feelings of self one does not have any meaning as to why he or she is here. Japan is now known for it elevated suicide rate and the Chinese are becoming known for their shoddy work. Why should anyone care about what they produce when what they do is ignored for the good of the many?

There is a new team in our world. It is the team of extremists. Most of these are religious based and have a tendency to discredit the individual while honoring the many. If the individual is the leader of the team then this concept isn't always followed. The terrifying reality is these teams state that a God is their leader. Having something that does not exist in our world lead a group of people by having chosen people guide them can only lead to incredible destruction and sorrow. If this last statement makes no sense do not dismay. It has never made any sense to anyone throughout the history of us.

I guess teams will always be part of our societies. I wouldn't be surprised if at the beginning of history a bunch of cave dwellers got together trying to figure out how to use their earlobes when one noticed an anthill flowing with ants building remarkable things. He probably told the group the only way to survive was to mimic the ants. The basic problem is that the wind of individualism has the tendency to blow them away.

The End.
