I am proud of my nation today

by

J. G. Fabiano

I am proud of my nation today.

I haven't been able to say that for some time now. I was proud of how the people of my nation came together after 9/11 to help all of those who were hurt. I was proud of the way they fought back against an obvious evil to destroy where they were allowed to become strong. I am proud of the young men and women who risked their lives to show the world that no nation will ever again have the capacity to attack our home without the consequence of extreme penalty.

It seems that our government became obsessed with this reality that we are still a proud and powerful nation. They seemed to take advantage of this fact by eliminating some of our basic freedoms, exchanging dreams with fears, and attempting to put its values on the rest of the world through might instead of right.

I am proud of my nation today. All across the country people are demonstrating against policies that are trying to weaken world organizations that have kept us at peace for almost 40 years. The people of our nation are telling their own leadership that it is time for them to listen to both the people of the world and their own citizens. To remember the foundations of our nation that include freedom, pride, and the knowledge that when we are forced to fight we will do so only when it is the last choice, not the first one.

I am proud of the people of the world today. I am proud of them because they are defending a united front by United Nations who want to do everything humanly possible to retain peace through law. The world's villains should take notice because this united front defending a glorious cause should never be interpreted as weakness. If they do, they will soon define their own demise.

I am proud of my nation today and it feels wonderful.
